MINIMAL ASSET PROCESS (MAP)

What debts can be included in a MAP?

Most unsecured debts — credit cards, loans, overdrafts, catalogues, council tax arrears, utility arrears and rent arrears. Some debts are excluded, including court fines, child maintenance arrears, student loans, and debts arising from fraud.

Debts that can be included

Standard consumer credit: credit cards, personal loans, payday loans, overdrafts, catalogue debts, store cards, buy-now-pay-later at collections.

Utility arrears (gas, electricity, water) and old mobile phone bills at collections.

Historic council tax arrears.

HMRC debts of most types.

Rent arrears from previous properties.

Debts that cannot be included

Court fines (criminal, road traffic).

Child maintenance arrears.

Student loans (all types).

Debts arising from fraud.

Confiscation orders and compensation orders from criminal proceedings.

Secured debts

Any secured debt (mortgage — which is unusual because MAP applicants normally do not own homes — car finance, secured loans) sits outside MAP.

The £25,000 upper limit

Total debts included must be no more than £25,000. If your total is higher, you would need to consider Full Administration or a Trust Deed.

This upper limit is one of the key differences between MAP and DRO (which allows up to £50,000).
