SELF-HELP DEBT OPTIONS

What free debt help services are available in the UK?

Regulated free services include StepChange, Citizens Advice, National Debtline, MoneyHelper, Christians Against Poverty, and PayPlan (fee-free debt management). All offer regulated debt help without charge — this is separate from UK Debt Team, which is an introducer service to regulated partners.

StepChange

The UK's largest debt charity. Provides free advice, DMP setup and administration, DRO applications (as Authorised Intermediaries), IVA introductions, and general support.

Contact via stepchange.org or 0800 138 1111.

Funded partly by fair-share contributions from creditors on DMPs — this does not affect the free service to debtors.

Citizens Advice

Available in every part of the UK through local offices. Provides free advice on debt, benefits, housing, employment and consumer issues.

Some offices have DRO Authorised Intermediaries; others refer to StepChange or other AIs.

Website: citizensadvice.org.uk. Local offices vary in availability of appointments.

National Debtline

Free specialist debt advice by phone and web chat. Runs the Debt Solutions Tool that helps identify the right route.

Contact via nationaldebtline.org or 0808 808 4000.

Also provides support for court proceedings and CCJ defence.

MoneyHelper

Government-backed service replacing the Money Advice Service. Provides guidance on money, debt, pensions and other financial topics.

Not primarily a debt help provider but signposts to StepChange and Citizens Advice for direct help.

Website: moneyhelper.org.uk.

Christians Against Poverty

Faith-based debt charity offering full support including budgeting, negotiation with creditors, DRO applications, and ongoing mentoring.

Available across the UK through local churches.

Website: capuk.org.

PayPlan

Free DMP provider funded through creditor contributions. Also handles IVA introductions.

Website: payplan.com.
