Why Advantis Credit May Be in Touch About an HMRC Debt

Getting a letter or call from a debt collection agency when the original debt is with HMRC can be confusing. HMRC — His Majesty's Revenue and Customs — is one of the most powerful creditors in the UK, but in certain circumstances it does instruct private debt collection agencies to chase outstanding amounts on its behalf. Advantis Credit is one of the agencies that has been used in this capacity.

This does not mean the debt is disputed or that anything unusual has happened. It typically means HMRC has been unable to collect the amount through its own internal processes and has referred the account to an external collector. The debt itself remains an HMRC debt — Advantis Credit acts as an agent, not as the new owner of the debt.

According to GOV.UK, HMRC has used private debt collection agencies (DCAs) since 2009 to help recover certain categories of tax debt. These agencies operate under strict instructions from HMRC and are not able to use enforcement powers independently — those remain with HMRC.

What Types of HMRC Debt Can Be Referred to Advantis Credit?

Not all HMRC debts are referred to external collection agencies. The types of debt most commonly passed to DCAs like Advantis Credit include:

HMRC tends to refer debts that are relatively straightforward in nature — amounts where liability is not in dispute but payment has not been made. If a debt is subject to a formal appeal or if there is a genuine disagreement about what is owed, it is less likely to be referred to a DCA at that stage.

KEY FACTHMRC DCAs like Advantis Credit cannot access bank accounts, cannot take goods, and cannot use bailiff powers. Only HMRC itself — through a formal enforcement route — can escalate to those measures.

Is Advantis Credit Legitimate?

Advantis Credit is a debt collection agency operating in the UK. UK Debt Team is not affiliated with Advantis Credit and this page is not their official website. Advantis Credit is not an enforcement agency and does not have powers to enter properties or seize assets. Their role is limited to contacting individuals and businesses to arrange repayment of debts referred to them by creditors, including HMRC.

If someone receives a letter claiming to be from Advantis Credit in connection with an HMRC debt, it is worth verifying the letter's authenticity before making any payment. According to GOV.UK guidance on identifying genuine HMRC contact, HMRC and its authorised agents will never ask for payment via gift cards, cryptocurrency, or unusual bank transfer methods. If anything about the contact feels wrong, it is possible to call HMRC directly using the number on GOV.UK to confirm whether the debt and the referral are genuine.

Authorised DCAs working on behalf of HMRC are required to identify themselves as collecting on HMRC's behalf and must follow the rules set out in HMRC's contract with them, which include conduct standards aligned with Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) consumer credit regulations.

What Advantis Credit Can and Cannot Do

Understanding the limits of a debt collection agency's powers is important. When Advantis Credit contacts someone about an HMRC debt, they are operating within a defined boundary.

What Advantis Credit cannot do

IMPORTANTIf a debt collector uses language that feels threatening, misleading, or harassment-like, this can be reported to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) or the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

What Happens If the Debt Is Not Addressed?

Ignoring contact from Advantis Credit in relation to an HMRC debt is unlikely to make the debt go away. If a DCA is unable to recover the amount, the case is typically referred back to HMRC, which has access to considerably more powerful recovery tools.

According to GOV.UK, HMRC can use a range of escalating enforcement actions for unpaid tax debts. These include:

None of these steps are automatic or immediate, but the risk of escalation is real. The Advantis Credit contact may represent an early stage in the process — before HMRC has needed to use its stronger powers.

Repayment Arrangements and Time to Pay

HMRC operates a Time to Pay (TTP) arrangement that allows individuals and businesses to spread HMRC debt over a period of time. In some cases, Advantis Credit may be able to discuss or facilitate a TTP arrangement on HMRC's behalf. However, formal TTP agreements are ultimately agreed with HMRC, not with the DCA.

According to GOV.UK, HMRC's Business Payment Support Service can be contacted at 0300 200 3835 to discuss payment difficulties before debts escalate further. For individuals with self-assessment debt, the self-assessment payment helpline can also discuss short-term deferrals or instalment plans.

A key point about TTP arrangements is that interest continues to accrue on unpaid tax debt while an arrangement is in place. As of 2024, HMRC charges 7.75% annual interest on late tax payments (the Bank of England base rate plus 2.5 percentage points), so delay increases the overall amount owed.

TIME TO PAYHMRC's Time to Pay scheme allows eligible individuals and businesses to spread tax debt over an agreed period. Arrangements are assessed case by case — there is no automatic right to a TTP, but HMRC does consider affordability.

What Formal Debt Solutions Apply to HMRC Debt?

HMRC debt is not excluded from formal insolvency and debt management solutions, but there are important rules about how HMRC is treated as a creditor. This section describes how different formal routes work in relation to HMRC debt generally — it is not personalised advice for any individual's situation.

Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA)

An IVA is a formal insolvency procedure administered by a licensed insolvency practitioner. HMRC can be included in an IVA as a creditor. HMRC is known to vote on IVA proposals and considers them based on what return it would receive compared to bankruptcy. There is no guarantee HMRC will accept any particular proposal.

Debt Relief Order (DRO)

A DRO is available to people with relatively low debt, low assets, and low disposable income. Following changes in June 2024, the debt threshold for a DRO rose to £30,000. HMRC debts, including tax credit overpayments and unpaid tax, can be included in a DRO. The application fee for a DRO was reduced to £90 in 2024.

Bankruptcy

Bankruptcy discharges most unsecured debts, including HMRC debts in many cases. However, debts arising from fraud are not dischargeable. Applying for bankruptcy in England and Wales costs £680 in fees, according to GOV.UK. After 12 months, most people are automatically discharged from bankruptcy.

Debt Management Plan (DMP)

A DMP is an informal arrangement to repay debts at a reduced rate. HMRC is not obliged to accept a DMP, and interest and penalties may continue. However, some people do negotiate with HMRC or use a DCA like Advantis Credit as a stepping stone to a longer-term repayment agreement.

How to Respond to Advantis Credit

For someone who has received contact from Advantis Credit about an HMRC debt, there are several practical considerations. First, verify the debt is genuine by checking against any HMRC correspondence or logging into a personal tax account on GOV.UK. Second, do not ignore the contact — even if the amount is disputed, engaging in writing creates a record and can pause further escalation while the matter is clarified.

If the amount is not in dispute and repayment in full is not possible, contacting HMRC directly to discuss a Time to Pay arrangement is one option. If the overall debt picture is more complex — for example, if there are multiple debts alongside the HMRC amount — then speaking to a regulated debt specialist may help clarify what formal routes are available.
